ABC News: Could Drivers Face Total Cell Phone Bans?

ABC News: Could Drivers Face Total Cell Phone Bans?

Well, I certainly would have had a much more enjoyable ride home tonight if this ban took place!  Some woman, in a silver Alero (not that I'm disparaging women or Aleros) seemed to think that it was her constitutional right to be in the left lane on 70 West out of Raleigh whilst texting on her cell phone.  Oblivious to those around her honking and flashing their lights at her while she was going 15 mph under the speed limit.

Hopefully you will some how happen upon this post and realize the error of your ways.  But, I doubt it - you are probably to self absorbed to recognize what a nuisance you were.

The ban cannot come soon enough!

Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later.

I think there should be a ban. I read the article in the paper and, obviously, those that are in the cell phone/wireless business don't think so; they say, "There is a way to be safe while talking on a cell phone and driving".

If there is, what is it? And, there is no way they can justify text messaging while driving.

I try very hard not to talk and drive. Every once in a while, I do and I'll admit it is distracting.

Of course, the problem with a ban would be reinforcing it. Given that the cops around here don't reinforce basic traffic laws, I'm not sure it'll make much difference.

Still, I'd like to see a ban. There is no reason all of us cannot pull over if we simply must make an emergency call.

The lone exception I can think of is if you are being followed/threatened by another driver and do not feel it is safe to stop the car. But this would entail dialing 911 and that's it; not texting, not going into you voicemail, etc.

I agree with you, without the police enforcing the law, the ban would be useless.

The problem with talking on the phone is that it is a major distraction. A number of studies have been conducted that show just how much of a distraction a cell phone can be (passengers less so).

I read this article last month and was going to blog about it, but got distracted: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE4B00NN20081201?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews

There are a couple links to videos at the bottom of the article that show driving simulations and the impact of talking on a cell phone versus talking to a passenger.

Scary!
